Damian Figueroa, a junior at FPCHS, and Trace Insalaco, a sophomore at Fleming Island High School, started the season as teammates, but are ending the season as rivals. The wrestlers have competed twice before the district meet with each coming out victorious once; Damian winning the most recent matchup. Districts were held Saturday, February 18th, and Damian wrestled against Trace for the third time. Going into the event FPC’s team and supporters had high hopes for Damian to win. Damian Figueroa explained how he felt going into the match by stating, “I knew it was going to be a rough match and he knew what my main moves were and I tried to do my best.”
Damian was the winner of the match after the regulation three rounds with the score being 6-2. Coach Riley Ward, an assistant FPC wrestling coach gave some insight explaining, “Damian controlled the match, he was able to capitalize on Trace’s mistake in the third period and got back points.” He further explained, “The whole match was high paced and both wrestlers wrestled hard.”
