The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention hosts walks throughout the United States. In an upcoming event on April 15th, 2017 at 9 a.m. they are going to be hosting an Out of the Darkness walk at Flagler Palm Coast High School. Joining this event would help raise awareness and fund the AFSP. The funds will assist in new research, support survivors of suicide loss, and create educational programs.
Mrs. Shoshanah Mercado started the walk in Palm Coast 3 years ago because her job as a school psychologist revolves around student mental health and suicide prevention. In terms of collaborating with other schools in Flagler County with this event she explained, “Time is a very limited thing for all of us! But the participation has increased every year and this year should be the best yet. We have multiple mental health agencies that are aware of it and may be able to attend and share their resources with the community. And, because this is a fun event that promotes positivity and strength, we will have two local bands performing, The Ned and Handsome Grandson.”
Anyone that would like to participate can register at the walk; this will start when the check-in for the walk begins to when the actual walk starts. All donations will be accepted until June 30th, 2017. The AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.
