The i3 Tech Academy asked themselves what can they could do to further their involvement in the community by using real world skills to help the homeless in Flagler County. From November 9th-13th the students worked on developing a plan to help homeless students and Adults in Palm Coast. This project consumed their time throughout the entire day for a total of 4 days and gave the students a subject to be passionate about other than their regular classes.
Mr. Bossardet an Assistant Principal at FPC came to talk to the students about homelessness. Often students have stress going through their mind and don’t consider what is going on around them, and the struggles others are facing each day. Throughout the week students started to grasp what is going on in other students lives. There are over 40 known homeless students in FPC that have let an adult know about their situation, but there are more students that are facing the hardships of life all by themselves with no support.
The i3 tech academy helped the homeless students within our school by collecting essential items to be delivered to them through the guidance counselors. There were hundreds of dollars collected by Mrs. Courtney Vandebunte’s class through the gift cards the i3 students collected, and Mr. Blake Vandebunte’s class collected the hygienic supplies needed to fill the boxes. There were 60 boxes in total and all boxes came with toothpaste, 2 toothbrushes, body soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, hair brush, tissues. The boxes were split into two groups female and male, the female boxes included feminine products. The boxes were delivered to the guidance counselors for them to pass out. “The Homeless project was a huge success, in the beginning it was hard because we didn’t know what the end product was going to be but in the end we came up with the boxes and made a big impact.” said Mrs. Vandebunte a major planner and teacher involved in the i3 homeless project.
Mr. Michael Rinyu’s class made inspiring brochures for the homeless, and also focused on the state of mind for children and families by collecting toys and books. Mrs. Schaefer’s class focused on helping the homeless find jobs and prepare them for interviews. “I liked how we collaborated during this project because, we got to hear everyone’s views on how to solve a well know problem, Unemployment.” said Johari, a senior i3 student involved in Mrs. Corinne Schaefer class.
Community service acts are great ways to personally impact your life as a teenager in modern day society. Any efforts to make a difference in the homeless population can not only help the others but also give students a fulfilling experience in their life.
